Hair Extensions 101: A Comprehensive Guide
History of Hair Extensions
Hair extensions were first used in
Egypt many centuries ago. The first hair extensions were made from either sheep’s
wool or human hair from donors. People used the hair extensions to signify age,
religion, and social rank. Although synthetic alternatives are now available,
human hair is still widely used.
Know Your Options
There are some hair extensions that
are easy to apply on your own. Among the common extensions
that you can comfortably apply at home are clip-ins. Other options, like
tape-ins, may need specialized application by experienced Cleveland
hair extensions stylists. Ready-to-wear extensions are easy to remove,
and you may need to apply them daily. A professional application, on the other
hand, can last up to eight weeks before you maintain or remove it.
Here are the most common types of
hair extensions:
Tape-Ins
Tape in extensions are single pieces
of hair that can be about an inch wide. A professional applies the hair to your
entire head using a special tape attached to the hair extensions. The hair
extensions use a specialized technique that makes them almost unnoticeable. Maintenance
for tape-in applications is required after about eight weeks, and takes roughly
an hour.
Individual
bonds
Glue, keratin and microbeads are
some of the adhesives used to permanently attach these hair extensions. Keratin
bonds require a special application, dealing with each stand separately. The
hair extensions can help achieve seamless results, as they will look so natural
on you. The process may take a few hours to complete depending on various
factors. A single application can last for
months, depending on the hair density.
Sew-Ins
These hair extensions are sometimes
referred to as hand-tied wefts or weaves. A stylist sews the extensions onto
tiny cornrows or braids of your hair. The extensions take several hours to
apply. You may, however, find that as hair grows out, it might become more visible.
You may need a touch-up after a few weeks for the extensions to look more
natural.
Hiring a Professional
While some extensions are easy to
install, going the professional route is the only way to get long lasting hair with
a natural appearance. The main variation
between professional and DIY applications is how well extensions bend with your
real hair. If you want to protect your
natural hair as much as possible, hiring a professional is your best bet. Going
for cheaper options will only cause more damage than good. It is actually
better to spend more on quality extensions than invest in low-quality
extensions that are easily noticeable.
